the birth of Imam Hassan (peace be upon him)

His Noble Birth:

He s born in Medina on the night of the middle of the month of Ramadan, according to the well-known and most common opinion among both the general public and scholars. Some say he s born in Sha'ban, likely confusing the date with the birth of his brother, Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), who s born in the third or second year of Hijrah. Other opinions exist, but the most established and famous is one of these two dates. He s the first son of Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them).

When Hassan s born, Fatimah said to Ali: "Name him." Ali replied, "I would not precede the Prophet (peace be upon him) in naming him." So, the Prophet (peace be upon him) came and took the child in his hands. He said, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You for him and his offspring from the accursed Satan," and then he performed the adhan in his right ear and the iqamah in his left ear. According to Asad al-Ghaba, it is narrated from Abu Ahmad al-‘Askari that the Prophet (peace be upon him) named him Hassan, a name which s not known in the pre-Islamic era.

His Generosity and Humility:

Abu Nu'aym narrates in Hilyat al-Awliya that Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) divided his wealth into two halves and gave it to charity. It is said that he did this on three occasions. He would even give ay a sandal while keeping another, and do the same with his slippers. Muhammad ibn Habib mentions similar in his Amali. Ibn Sa'd, in Tabaqat, narrates that Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) divided his wealth three times, giving ay sandals while holding onto others, and twice gave ay his wealth for the sake of Allah.

In Sharh al-Nahj, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Habib reports that Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) gave a poet money, and one of his companions commented, "SubhanAllah, you give to a poet who defies the Merciful and speaks lies?" Imam Hassan replied, "O Abdullah, the best thing you can give from your wealth is what protects your honor, and seeking goodness also means avoiding harm."

Ibn Shahr Ashub, in Manaqib, narrates that a man came to Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) asking for help, so he gave him fifty thousand dirhams and five hundred dinars, then said, "Go get someone to carry it for you." When a porter s brought, Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) gave him his cloak and said, "This is the porter’s fee." An Arab came to him once, and when asked, "What do you have for me?" Imam Hassan found twenty thousand dirhams in the treasury and handed them to him. The Arab said, "My lord, why didn’t you let me speak my need and praise you openly?" Imam Hassan responded with the verse, "We are people whose generosity is abundant."

His Humility:

Ibn Shahr Ashub narrates from the books Al-Funoon and Nuzhat al-Absar that Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) once passed by some poor people sitting and picking up pieces of bread from the ground. They invited him to share with them, and Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) joined them, saying, "Allah does not love the arrogant." He ate with them, then invited them to his home, where he fed and clothed them.

His Physical Appearance, Character, and Conduct:

Al-Ghazali in Ihya' al-'Ulum and Al-Makki in Qut al-Qulub report that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Imam Hassan (peace be upon him), "You resemble my character and appearance." Al-Mufid in Al-Irshad states that Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) s the most similar in appearance and conduct to the Prophet (peace be upon him). According to Asad al-Ghaba, Anas ibn Malik reported that no one resembled the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than Imam Hassan, and Al-Baghawi, in his Misbah al-Sunnah, narrates the same, adding that Imam Hussain also resembled him.

It is said that Anas ibn Malik made this statement when he saw the head of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) in front of Ibn Ziyad. The two narrations together suggest that while Imam Hassan s the closest to the Prophet in appearance, Imam Hussain became the closest after Hassan's passing.

He would often lk barefoot to perform Hajj, constantly remembering Allah in all his actions. He s also the most tthful in speech and the most eloquent in language. When he reached the door of the mosque, he would raise his head and say, "O my Lord, Your guest has arrived at Your door, and the sinner has come. Forgive the bad deeds in exchange for the good deeds You have."

The Prophet's Love for Imam Hassan:

In Al-Tadhkira and Musnad Ahmad, it is narrated by Al-Bara ibn 'Azib that he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) carrying Imam Hassan on his shoulder, saying, "O Allah, I love him, so love him." Abu Nu'aym in Hilyat al-Awliya also reports the same from Al-Bara, with a slight variation: "Whoever loves me should love him."

Also, Ahmad ibn Hanbal in Musnad narrates from Abu Huraira that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once came to visit the house of Fatimah, and when Imam Hassan ran to him, the Prophet (peace be upon him) embraced and kissed him, saying, "O Allah, love him and love those who love him."
