The blessed Month of Ramadan holds a عظيمة position and lofty rank in the true religion of Islam and in Islamic law. Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, specifically mentioned the Month of Ramadan by name in His Noble Book, unlike the other months. It is mentioned once by name in verse 185 of Surah Al-Baqarah, whereas the other months are referred to collectively, as Allah says:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah…” (Qur’an 9:36)

Some months are alluded to, but not mentioned explicitly by name.

Definition of the Month of Ramadan

The blessed Month of Ramadan is the ninth Month of the Arabic lunar calendar. It is the Month of Allah, the Month of fasting, the master and best of all months. It is the Month of patience and compassion, the Month in which the Qur’an was revealed, and also the Month in which the other heavenly scriptures were revealed.

The Meaning of “Ramadan”

Al-‘Allamah Al-Turayhi said: Ramadan is the name of the month. It is said that it was named so because its timing coincided with intense heat (ramad), which refers to the strong heat of the sun upon الرمل and other surfaces. Its plural forms are Ramadanat and Armidha’.
There are narrations reported from Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) discouraging the use of the word “Ramadan” alone without saying “Month of Ramadan,” because “Ramadan” is one of the Names of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious.
It is narrated from Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon himStatus Month Ramadan 3.png

“Do not say ‘Ramadan,’ but say ‘Month of Ramadan,’ for you do not know what Ramadan is.”

It is also narrated from Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon himStatus Month Ramadan 3.png

“Do not say ‘This is Ramadan,’ nor ‘Ramadan has gone,’ nor ‘Ramadan has come,’ for Ramadan is a Name among the Names of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. It does not come or go; rather, that which comes and goes is what perishes. Instead, say ‘Month of Ramadan,’ for the Month is attributed to the Name, and the Name is the Name of Allah. It is the Month in which the Qur’an was revealed.”

Ramadan in the Holy Qur’an

Allah, the Exalted, says:

“The Month of Ramadan in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend hardship for you, and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that to which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” (Qur’an 2:185)

Laylat al-Qadr: The Heart of Ramadan

Among the factors that increase the greatness of this Month is that it contains Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), which is better than a thousand months, as clearly stated in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree. And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Qur’an 97:1–5)

And He also says:

“Ha Meem. By the clear Book. Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn. In it every wise matter is made distinct.” (Qur’an 44:1–4)

It is narrated from Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon himStatus Month Ramadan 3.png

“The number of months with Allah is twelve… The foremost of the months is the Month of Allah, which is the Month of Ramadan. The heart of the Month of Ramadan is Laylat al-Qadr. The Qur’an was revealed on the first night of Ramadan, so receive the Month with the Qur’an.”

The Month of Revelation of the Heavenly Scriptures

Allah honored the Month of Ramadan by choosing it for the revelation of the heavenly scriptures to His great prophets. The Scriptures of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the Torah to Musa (peace be upon him), the Gospel to ‘Isa (peace be upon him), and the Psalms to Dawud (peace be upon him) were all revealed in the blessed Month of Ramadan.
It is narrated from Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon himStatus Month Ramadan 3.png

“The Qur’an was sent down all at once in the Month of Ramadan to al-Bayt al-Ma‘mur, then it was revealed over twenty years. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The Scriptures of Ibrahim were revealed on the first night of Ramadan; the Torah after six nights of Ramadan had passed; the Gospel after thirteen nights; the Psalms after eighteen nights; and the Qur’an on the twenty-third night of Ramadan.”

What Is the Right of Ramadan Upon Us?

Islam has encouraged honoring this great month, making the most of its hours, enlivening its nights with worship, prayer, and supplication, and its days with fasting and striving to please Allah through righteous deeds.
It is narrated from Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon himStatus Month Ramadan 3.png

“The Month of Ramadan is unlike any other month. It has a right and a sanctity. Increase in prayer as much as you are able.”

It is narrated by Abu Basir from Imam Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said:

“The Month of Ramadan is unlike any other month. It has a right and a sanctity, so increase in prayer as much as you are able.”
