The Passing of Umm al-Banin (a.s.)


She is Fatima bint Hizam Abu al-Mahal ibn Khalid ibn Rabi‘a ibn al-Waheed ibn Ka‘b ibn ‘Amir ibn Kilab, and her mother is Tamama bint Sahl ibn ‘Amir ibn Malik ibn Ja‘far ibn Kilab. Identity of Umm al-Banin (a.s.)


She is Fatima, daughter of Hizam Abu al-Mahal ibn Khalid ibn Rabi‘a ibn al-Waheed ibn Ka‘b ibn ‘Amir ibn Kilab, and her mother is Tamama bint Sahl ibn ‘Amir ibn Malik ibn Ja‘far ibn Kilab.

She was most likely born five years after the Hijra, and she passed away on 13th of Jumada al-Thani, on a Friday, in the year 64 AH, after the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.), according to some narrations. Her Children


She bore four sons for Amir al-Mu’minin Imam Ali (a.s.

Al-Abbas ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, born on 4th of Sha‘ban, 26 AH.
Abdullah ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, aged 25 on the day of Karbala.
Uthman ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, aged 23 on the day of Karbala.
Ja‘far ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, the youngest of them on the day of Karbala.

Her Tribe


There is no disagreement about the bravery, courage, valor, and fearlessness of her tribe. Among them were:

Malik ibn al-Bara’, known as Mula‘ib al-Asinna (“the spear-player”).
‘Amir ibn al-Tufayl, renowned for generosity and courage.


Thus, they combined honor, generosity, and heroism. This lineage is why Aqil, the genealogist and brother of Imam Ali (a.s.), suggested her as a wife when Imam Ali asked him:
“Find me a woman born of the noble and courageous families of the Arabs so that she may bear me a brave son.”




Aqil replied:
“Where are you from Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya? There is none among the Arabs whose forefathers are braver or more skilled than hers.”
Her Noble Character


When she entered the house of Imam Ali (a.s.), she cared for the children of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (s.a.) more than she cared for her own children, as compensation for the sorrow and loss they suffered after the passing of their mother.

One day she said to Imam Ali (a.s.
“O Abu al-Hasan, call me by my title Umm al-Banin, and do not call me by my name Fatima.”




He asked her why.

She said:
“I fear that al-Hasan and al-Husayn may hear the name of their mother Fatima, and their hearts will break.”




What an exalted, patient, and righteous woman — may God bless her resting place and illuminate her grave. Because of her purity and sincerity, she gained a high status with God, His Messenger, and the Ahlulbayt. It is said that whoever sincerely implores God by her noble position, their needs are granted unless prohibited by divine wisdom — and for this reason people became deeply devoted to her.

Out of gratitude and honor, it is narrated that on the Day of Resurrection, Lady Fatima al-Zahra (s.a.) will emerge carrying two severed hands — the hands of Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas (a.s.) — and will say:
“O Just and Wise One! Judge between me and the one who cut off these two hands.”




When Lady Zaynab (s.a.) returned to Medina after the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn and the captivity, her eyes met those of Umm al-Banin. Lady Zaynab cried:
“O brother! O Abbas!”




And Umm al-Banin responded:
“O my sons! O Husayn!”




As for her worship, devotion, prayer, and reliance upon God, they were profound and noble qualities in this honorable and dignified woman of pure roots and virtues. Her Spiritual Influence


One of the scholars studying her biography wrote:
“The lives of the great figures of Islam are lofty human examples admired by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Umm al-Banin was among the boldest, most courageous, and steadfast believing women. She sought honor and dignity — and such virtues are attained only through endurance, sacrifice, and bravery.”




Umm al-Banin was a model of steadfastness, sincerity, courage, sacrifice, honor, and dignity in the path of truth and justice. When the news of Imam al-Husayn’s martyrdom reached her, her tears flowed like a bereaved mother’s, day and night. Indeed, for someone like Husayn, let all mourners weep.

Her life contains inspiring lessons, making her a shining example of faith and righteousness — fulfilling God’s command and the Prophet’s instruction to love, honor, and follow the Ahlulbayt. Every Muslim should follow this divine command without deviation.

Her wide knowledge, sincerity, and noble lineage played a powerful role in people’s affection and trust in her. Through her wisdom, patience, and foresight, she overcame difficulties — a sign of her strong character, noble upbringing, and genuine Islamic ethics.

To those who studied her life, it is clear that she was deeply devoted to the Ahlulbayt, loyal to their cause, and insightful regarding their mission. She illuminated a path of reform and played an important role in Islamic and Arab history.
